A fluid coupling comprises an impeller and runner with a plurality of centrifugal pump vanes rotatable concentrically with the impeller provided to pump fluid from the coupling, a freely rotatable coupling housing, brake means for controlling the rotation of the housing, a fluid reservoir mounted to rotate independently of the housing and to contain a centrifugally-formed fluid ring therein, a fluid outlet from the coupling housing to the reservoir, a fluid inlet from the reservoir to the housing, a centrifugal pump wheel in the reservoir and coupled to the impeller and means for retarding the rotative speed of the reservoir to secure a speed differential between the pump wheel and reservoir. An impeller 2 secured to a driving shaft 4 and having centrifugal pump blades 20, and a number 14 secured to a driven shaft 8, are contained in a rotatable housing 11, the speed of which is controlled by a brake 43. The housing 11 is rotatably mounted on a boss 23 of a reservoir 5 rotatably mounted on the shaft 4, the speed of rotation of the reservoir being controlled by a brake 40. A centrifugal wheel pump 32 is keyed to the shaft 4 and rotates within the reservoir 5. Outlet ducts 25 from the housing 11, controlled by ball valves 36 communicate through the boss 23 with the interior of the reservoir 5 and outlet ducts 34 from the reservoir 5, controlled by ball valves 37 communicate through the boss 23 with the interior of the housing 11. The impeller 2 has a plurality of inlet ducts 44 and outlet ducts 45. Emptying of the housing 11 is obtained by applying the brake 43 and filling by applying the brake 40.
