Transfers for application to pottery or similar articles are made by printing the flat background of the design on a paper sheet by normal lithographic methods and then applying colour through a stencil screen to selected portions of the design which are to be in relief. The relief portions give to the design a hand-painted appearance. Two stencils are used for each colour, one for printing the parts which are to appear in full relief and another to print parts which are to appear in partial relief. The stencil screens are prepared, for example, by photographic methods, using a bichromated colloid.
