In a turning lathe type of potato &c. peeler the cutter carrying arm 5 is mounted on a sleeve 4 which can be slid by hand over a casing to adjust the position of the cutter 20 along the length of the potato and the cutter can also be swung by hand angularly to the potato axis about an axis 9 by means of slip-friction blocks 13 and a worm 12 and worm wheel 13 which rotates the lever 8, 9 thereby allowing the operator to adjust at any time the angular setting of the cutter in relation to the potato axis. The arm 5 is pressed towards the potato by a bowed leaf spring 18, one end of which is adjustable in notches 19 to vary the pressure. The machine is operated by a handle which through reducing gears rotates the impaling spike 1 and the spindle 17. The cutter comprises a gauge shaped blade 6 with oblique peeling edge 20 and a shoulder 21 to guide away the peel. The cutter may pivot about a pin 23 in a fork 22 to adapt its position automatically to the outline of the vegetable. In Fig. 3 in which the impaling spike 1 is vertical an ejector 24 raised by depressing a handle 26 pushes the peeled potato off the spike.
