The process in order to remove the hydrocarbon oils of the mercaptans by treatment with an alkaline aqueous solution of a hydroxide of an alkali metal containing, by dissolving a plumbite of alkali metal and in suspension, a lead sulfide
Mercaptans are removed from hydrocarbon oils by treating the oils with an aqueous solution containing 2-25 gms/litre of dissolved alkali metal hydroxide and 2-5 gms./litre of lead monoxide dissolved in the form of alkali metal plumbite, in which 5-15 gms./litre of lead monosulphide are suspended. This suspension may be prepared by using a solution, containing 7-20 gms. of lead monoxide dissolved in the form of alkali metal plumbite and 2-25 gms. of alkali metal hydroxide, for removing mercaptans from a hydrocarbon oil, thereby forming a suspension of lead sulphide in the solution. The alkali metal hydroxide may be sodium hydroxide. Oxygen, e.g. a free oxygen-containing gas such as air, may be dissolved in the oil before treatment or injected into the mixture of oil and the suspension. Sulphur, as such, or as a solution e.g. in hydrocarbon oil, may also be added during the treatment or to the oil after separation of the suspension. The oil and the suspension may be mixed in a mixing apparatus e.g. a turbo-mixer. The suspension may be reused many times and may finally be regenerated by heating to 50-80 DEG C. Straight run gasoline, reformed gasoline and kerosine may be treated. U.S.A. Specifications 1,754,649, 1,789,335 and 2,049,423 are referred to.
