762,929. Earth-excavating apparatus. CEMENTATION CO., Ltd. Aug. 29, 1955 [Nov. 12, 1954], No. 32877/54. Class 68 (1). A mucking unit for use in shaft sinking comprises an elongated frame la, 1b, means for the suspension 'of and the raising and lowering of the frame within a shaft, a jib 2 so mounted on the frame that it can be slewed and luffed in relation to the frame by means 10, 23 mounted on and within the frame, and a grab or like mechanical excavator suspended from the jib and actuated by means 16 disposed in the frame. The frame is formed by two lattice work structures 1a, 1b of substantially rectangular cross section, the dimensions of the structures being such that when the structures are secured together a step is formed on the top of the lower structure 1b. On this step is mounted a turntable 5a on which is pivotally mounted at 6 the jib 2. Movement of the turntable is caused by the piston-cylinder motor 10, 10a, 10b acting on a cable 8 secured to either end 10a, 10b of the piston and wound around a drum 5 forming part of the turntable 5a. The jib is luffed and the grab operated by winches 23, 16 mounted in the lower structure above the operator's cabin 17 from which the motor 10, 10a, 10b and the winches 23, 16 are controlled. The jib hoist rope is preferably guided about a pulley 20 so disposed on-the structure as to permit of the end of the rope attached to the grab to be maintained at a substantially constant height when the jib is luffed. The winches and motor are pneumatically operated.
