Improvements in or relating to Shaft Couplings for Mechanically and Electrically Connecting the Rotor Shaft of a Turbogenerator with a Separator Shaft

A turbo-generator includes a field winding and a rotor shaft to which a second shaft is coaxially coupled; each shaft has an axial bore and each carrier, outside its axial bore, electrical leads for supplying current to the field winding, the electrical leads of the two shafts being connected together. Each of two slip rings 11, 12, Fig. 1, is connected by a plurality of hollow conductors 10 to one of two conductive annuli 13a, 13b connected by leads 5, 6 to the field winding, which also comprises hollow conductors. In a modification, Fig. 4, the leads 36 from each of the slip rings are mounted in holes in respective conductive annuli 35 and the leads 30, 31 mounted in holes in respective annuli 33, the annuli being connected together by flexible, conductive clips 34 which are secured to the annuli 35 and contact the annuli 33. The clip 34 permits thermal expansion of the annuli while maintaining electrical contact. The electrical connections, the conductors 10 and the slip rings are air-cooled, the air being fan driven, Fig. 1, or free flowing, Fig. 4. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), water is used for cooling, the conductors 10 being connected by conduits (19) to axial water-carrying bores formed in the shafts.
