The active material of a lead-acid accumulator consists of lead oxide mixed with a small quantity, of a hydrophilic substance that will absorb at least twenty times its own weight of water. Suitable substances are sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, carboxymethyl hydroxyethyl cellulose, methyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl cellulose, cellulose ethers, substituted starch acid-ester derivatives containing carboxylic and sulphuric acid groups, and sodium bentonite. The lead oxide and hydrophilic substance are mixed with water to form a paste which is pressed into the electrode grids which are used in an electrolyte of sulphuric acid. The active paste may include expanders such as carbon black, barium sulphate and lignin derivatives.
