A device for de-beaking and trimming spurs of poultry by cauterization comprises a blade 9 having parallel external surfaces on either side of an internal electric heating coil and a co-operating anvil 7. Arms 1 and 2 are connected by a pivot 3 and urged apart by a coil spring 4. One arm 2 carries an anvil 7 and an adjustable stop 14 for limiting the amount of beak or spur removed. The other arm 1 carries an insulated block 8 supporting a blade 9 which is formed by a flat steel plate bent back on itself and encloses a heating coil. The heating coil is supplied, through a cable 12 and leads 11, with electric current from a low-voltage supply, e.g. a car battery. The heating coil may be thermostatically controlled.
