A mercury arc rectifier vessel 3 has anodes 6 arranged symmetrically along a circle, each anode being surrounded by a ferromagnetic protecting tube 5 and each protecting tube being surrounded by an asymmetric ferromagnetic body 8 to compensate magnetic disturbing fields. Each body 8 may surround the whole or only a part of the axial length of a protecting tube 5 and may comprise a ferromagnetic cylinder provided with a longitudinal slot which may be filled with a non-magnetic material, or a ferromagnetic cylinder provided with a longitudinal groove. Each ferromagnetic body 8 is connected to and supported by the ferromagnetic vessel 3 in a magnetically insulated manner. Each body 8 can be rotatably adjustable.
