Class 82(2) Solid substances are classified by density by putting them into suspension in a liquid medium of intermediate density and imparting vibrations to the mass of liquid and suspended substances. The liquid may consist of water or of a dense liquor (e.g. a mixture of water and fine particles of shists, galenas, baryte or magnetite). The apparatus comprises a constant level tank with an outlet 2 and a feeding box 3. From the bottom of the tank there rises obliquely a pipe 4. Vibrators are attached at 5 and 5a so that the vibrations tend to move substances resting on the bottom of the pipe towards its higher end, and ensure the stability of a dense liquor, if used. The tank and pipe may be mechanically independent and connected by rubber.
