A quoin comprises a side-by-side assembly of clamping members 1, 1 relatively displaceable laterally under the action of a wedge 9 operated by a screw 8 and engaging the inner inclined surfaces 11, 11 of the members, and the inclined surfaces 11, 11 of the members or 10, 10 of the wedge or both are convexedly curved in such a way as to produce a linear contact between the wedge and members, the lines of contact being longitudinal of the members, in order to prevent any tendency of the quoin when used to raise the forme in the chase. If only the wedge or members are curved, the curvature may be of radius 4 inches, in the case of the wedge the tangent to the curved surface at the point of intersection with the upper horizontal surface being inclined to the latter 54 degrees. If both surfaces are curved, the radius may be 6 inches. Specification 698,280 is referred to.
