801,483. Stiffening leather-like agglutinated fibre materials. ALEGRE, A. A. Dec. 16, 1954 [Dec. 17, 1953], No. 36441/54. Class 140. Porous artificial leather composed of natural or synthetic fibres bonded together with a latex of natural or synthetic rubber is hardened, i.e. stiffened, by placing it in a bath at not less than room temperature containing a hardening agent which does not react with the artificial leather but hardens it by penetrating into the pores of the fibrous structure of the artificial leather without destroying its porous characteristic, followed by drying, preferably at room temperature. The hardening agent may be casein, starch or starch derivatives, glues, gelatine, dextrin, carob seed, or natural or synthetic resins, e.g. vinyl resins with a plasticiser, and may be dissolved or dispersed in aqueous solutions which may contain wetting agents to assist in impregnating the artificial leather.
