In disintegrating fibrous materials such as wood pulp, broke, or waste paper, the material is supplied to a tank F containing water &c. and circulated in two streams x and y which mingle as illustrated, the axially-directed stream y being the faster and comprising the coarser particles and being circulated by ribbed, spoonlike, sheet metal blades B on a rotor R, and the slower radially-directed stream x comprising the finer particles being circulated by horn-shaped blades A on the same rotor R, the blades A being of approximately D-section, the flat side of the D being on the pulp-propelling surface. There may be more than one such rotor in the tank F, and such a rotor may be fitted to other machines, e.g. to a beater. The or each rotor rotates about a vertical axis.
