921,659. Glass pressing apparatus. A. E. RADINGER, H. C. RADINGER, and R. PILGRAM, [trading as H. PUTSCH & CO.]. March 8, 1960 [March 14, 1959], No. 8091/60. Class 56. The apparatus includes a press ram arranged to be moved towards and away from a mould by fluid pressure and a pressure-operated device for applying to the mould a closing collar slidably mounted on the press ram, a control valve being provided by which pressure on the closing collar can be maintained whilst that from the ram is released so that the ram can remain in position without applied pressure until the pressed glass is set. In the form shown, the glass is pressed between a die 35 and a plunger 37 carried on a ram 31. The ram carries pistons 19, 27 movable in stationary cylinders 18, 26 and also a piston 30 in a cylinder 29 which is slidable on the ram and to which are attached the supports 33 for the ring 34 which closes the top of the mould. Fluid pressure from a main 12 is applied through reducing valves 13, 20 to reservoirs 14, 21 and also to a conduit 44 and thence to valves 2, 3, 4 operated in sequence by a timing device 1. Operation of the valve 2 applies pressure to a conduit 11 to move valves 6, 8, 10 to positions shown. The valve 6 applies pressure above the piston 19 from the reservoir 14, through the conduit 16, to move the ram downwards. The valve 8 applies pressure above the piston 27 from the reservoir 21 equal to that applied continuously below the piston 30 from the same source. After a time sufficient to complete the moulding operation, the valve 3 applies pressure to a conduit 40 to move the valve 6 to the right to close the conduit 16 and vent the space above the piston 19 to the atmosphere. The pressures applied above the piston 27 and below the piston 30 being equal, the plunger 37 is held in contact with the glass only by the weight of the ram while the glass hardens and until the valve 4 operates to apply pressure to the conduit 42 to move the valve 8 to the right and the valve 9 to the left to vent the space above the piston 27 to the atmosphere and apply pressure from the conduit 44 through conduits 45 to below the pistons 19, 27 to lift the ram to a position where the cycle can recommence.
