In a heterogeneous gas-cooled reactor, burnt fuel cans are detected by monitoring the gas in each fuel channel of the graphite moderator. The channels are arranged in groups, the radio activity of the gas from each group being tested in turn. When the level of radio activity of a group rises above a predetermined value, the gas from each channel in the group is tested separately. Visual indicators are operated to display the number of the group and the faulty channel. Two separate electrical circuits control, respectively, the testing of the groups and the individual channels of each group. The individual channel circuit is not operated during normal operation but is activated only when the group circuit detects abnormal radio activity. Each detector comprises a scintillator counter and a photomultiplier tube the output of which is recorded graphically. The indicators are drums, rotated electrically, synchronously with the group selector relays. Upon detection of a fault, one indicator is de-clutched from the drive motor and displays the group and channel of the faulty element, the remaining indicator continuously displaying the groups under test.
