Each pump 1, 2, including its rising pipe and pump shaft, is arranged in a trunk 7 and discharges to a main cargo pump 8 operated by a water turbine. The deep well pumps reduce the suction lift that would otherwise be necessary for the main cargo pump 8 to empty the tanks, and the water turbines reduce the explosion risks present when electric pumps are used.
