853,060. Marine lifesaving. DAVIT DEVELOPMENTS Ltd. March 24, 1958 [Feb. 25, 1957; April 5, 1957], Nos. 6172/57 and 11097/57. Class 77. [Also in Group XXXIII] Packs 6, Fig. 1, each containing an inflatable raft, life-belt or body harness &c., are ejected into the sea, either singly or together, from a container 5, which is allowed, through a quick release 14, to swing about a pivot 8 secured to a ship, a pier &c. The container cover 23 is knuckle-jointed at 24 so that in the pack ejection position cover and container side 5a form a ramp. The container outward swing and return movements is respectively controlled and effected by a cable 27, winch 28 and brake 29. In another apparatus the sides 22, 23, 26, Fig. 2, of the container are knuckle-jointed to one another to provide a discharge ramp when pack ejection is effected. The container pivot may be so located that, for ejection, the container travels over a dead-centre position about the pivot, and manually or mechanically operated means may be provided to move the container to and over the said position. In yet another apparatus the side 26, Fig. 2, may be omitted the side 23 being held by releasable retaining means. The base and/or any or all of the sides of the container may have skids, runners, rollers, endless belts &c., for assisting the outward run of the packs, and/ or the or each pack may rest in or on a tray, trolley or slide which may either be discharged into the sea with the pack, or may be held captive by a line after leaving the container. Spring or other means may be provided for initiating pack or trolley ejection from the container and means may be arranged for arresting ejection until required after the container has moved to the ejection position. The apparatus may be remotely controlled and ratchet gear &c. may be used to prevent apparatus "back-swinging" under extreme operating conditions.
