A road-making machine.for compacting a top layer of loose material has a power-driven rotor 64 arranged transversely to the direction of motion, a frame comprising a reservoir (24) in which the rotor rotates in the loose material, tools 72 on the rotor throwing the material under a strickle 84 arranged transversely at the rear of the frame, and a transverse closely-spaced series of vertically-guided hammers 93 operated from a cam-shaft 62. The hammers are pivoted at 109 on arm 108 via a screwed sleeve 106 and actuated by a roller 111 on snail-cam 112. Auxiliary hammers 114 are carried on the main hammers, sliding freely vertically along them and are under control of a compression spring on the stem 116. These hammers are operated by their own inertia and effect a preliminary tamping. Rollers may be used for the preliminary tamping instead of the hammers 114. The hammers may have detachable sole-plates 123. Tracks 28 run on an assembly which carries the main part of the machine on arms 32 pivoted to the machine at 37. Each arm 32 is under the influence of a hydraulic cylinder 51 acting through levers 47, 46 and connected to the arm 32 through the telescopic strut 43 to a bracket 41. A crank-handle 44 provides fine adjustment for the height adjustment of the machine, the hydraulic cylinders giving the main adjustment. The rotor has axially-spaced angularly-staggered arms 69, 70 carrying T- shaped tools at their outer end. The tools are arranged to form opposed helices to give an intermixing action. The strickle 84 is arranged for independent height adjustment at each end. The machine is towed in use at about 6 ft. per min. by a tow-bar 27. Additives, such as pitch or cement powder and water, may be added in the mixing action.
