An automatic-lathe comprises a cam 8 for feeding a slide 2 to working position and means 46, 50 for disengaging the feed and retaining the slide in that position, the slide carrying a cam-operated tool-slide 3. The cam 8 acts against a spring 13 through a lever 6, a gearsector 5 and a rack 4. A second cam 19 controls a lever 16 to move the cross-slide 3 against a spring 26. An adjustable stop 61 on the slide 3 can engage a bell-crank 54 which is urged against a pin 59 by a spring 57, and engages a lever 42 urged upwardly by a spring 56 and mounted on an adjustable block 36 secured to the lathe-bed. In operation, the cam 8 moves the tool to just beyond working position whereby a dog 50 on the slide 2 trips the lever 42 so that, when the cam 8 turns to a portion of smaller radius, the slide is held in forward position by the dog 50 engaging the projection 46 on the lever. The tool is then traversed bv the cam 19 until the screw 61 turns the bellcrank 54 to depress the lever 50 and release the slide 2. In a modification, the bell-crank 54 engages an adjustable abutment on the bed to determine the forward position of the slide 2.
