In a rectilinear combing machine, the length of the path of the lap, between a spacially fixed nip 8 and'the nip 9 between the feed roller 6 and the nipper plate 7, is maintained substantially constant, during the reciprocatory movement of the nippers, by means of a guide roller 5 which is oscillated through an angle α about an eccentric shaft 10 in synchronism with the combing cycle. The carrier rollers 2, 3 for the lap roll 1 are driven at constant speed. Roller 5 may be made suitably non-cylindrical to compensate for the difference between the continuous feed by rollers 2, 3 and the intermittent feed by roller 6.
