A refrigerator is divided by a heat conducting partition 23 into upper and lower storage compartments 1, 2 the former containing in its upper part an evaporator 17 and the latter being cooled by cold air flowing from the former through a valved aperture 24 in the lower part of the rear wall, warm air flowing from the upper part of compartment 2 through side channels 21 which are insulated from both the surroundings and the storage compartment 1 and discharge the air through outlets 22 in the vicinity of evaporator 17 for recooling. As shown the outlets 22 are above evaporator 17 which has a hood 19 to prevent warm air entering the evaporator and raising its temperature too much. Alternatively the outlets may be disposed in the side walls of compartment 1 adjacent the evaporator. Each compartment 1, 2 has its own door. The heat emitting parts of the refrigerating system (compression or absorption) are located in the rear of a top section 3 the front part of which serves as a drying cabinet and is traversed by the warmed air. A drip tray 18 is disposed beneath evaporator 17.
