A portable machine for facing pipe flanges includes a stationary annular centralizing member which can be fitted over the end of a flanged pipe and secured by means engaging the outer wall of the pipe. The stationary centralizing member 10 is provided with screwed rods 13 by which it is secured to the end of a pipe 16. The member 10 comprises two flanged members 17, 18, which form between them an annular chamber 19 in which is housed a worm wheel 20 with an integral hub 21. A carrier 26 is bolted to the worm wheel to rotate therewith and extending diametrically across the carrier is a bridge-piece 28 on which a sliding tool-holder 36 is moved by a screw 30. The latter may be adjusted by a hand wheel 32 and is driven step-by-step during rotation of the worm by a striker (not shown) engaging a toothed wheel 31 fixed to the screw. The member 10 is shaped at one side to form a housing for a worm 42 which drives the worm wheel and is driven through reduction gearing from a self-contained motor. The tool 37 is adjustable parallel to the pipeaxis and may be replaced by a tool for turning the periphery of the pipe flange.
