891,608. Drawing. MARSHALL RICHARDS MACHINE CO. Ltd. Oct. 20, 1960 [Oct. 21, 1959], No. 35641/59. Class 83 (4). A rotatable swift comprises a frame 1, means for rotating the frame and a plurality of rollers 12, 14, mounted on the frame and adapted to give vertical and transverse support to a coil of wire 26 in a position surrounding the axis of rotation of the frame. The frame 1 comprises a drum 2 mounted on bearings 7 and driven by a shaft 3 through a free wheel 6. The driving means comprises a belt 11, a reduction gear 10 and an electric motor 9 supplied by a generator (not shown) driven by the shaft of the driving block so that the speed of the swift is determined by the speed of the wire. Eight rollers 12 are mounted in the wall of drum and eight rollers 14 are mounted radially in a flange 13 formed at the lower end of the drum. The swift is mounted on a carriage 4, supported by parallel stanchions 15 and 16, which is raised and lowered by an hydraulic unit comprising a cylinder 20 fixed to the carriage and a piston-rod 19 attached to the stanchion 15. Each stanchion comprises a rail section 17 and a rack 18, and across the carriage runs a shaft 24 bearing pinions 22 and 23 which engage the racks and keep the carriage level. The carriage also supports a guard plate 25 to restrain the end of the wire as it leaves the swift. The swift may be made of light alloy or timber and the rollers 12 and 14 are preferably steel. The two sets of rollers may be replaced by a single set of flanged rollers mounted with their axes either parallel or at right-angles to the axis of the swift.
