891,609. Drawing. MARSHALL RICHARDS MACHINE CO. Ltd. Oct. 20, 1960 [Oct. 21, 1959], No. 35642/59. Class 83 (4). A swift comprises a frame 1, a plurality of rollers 12, 14 mounted on the frame and adapted to provide vertical and transverse support for a coil of wire, and means for driving at least some of the rollers for the purpose of rotating the coil about its longitudinal axis. The frame comprises a circular drum 2 and a flange 13 integral therewith. Mounted in the frame are eight vertical rollers 12 and eight radially disposed horizontal rollers 14. The rollers 12 have a bevelled edge which engages the edge of a disc 28 and the rollers 14 have a similarly bevelled edge which engages a disc 30. Both the discs are mounted on a shaft 3 which is mounted in the frame 1 by bearings 5 and is driven through a V-belt 11 and a reduction gear 10 from an electric motor 9. The motor is supplied by a generator (not shown) driven from the shaft of the drawing block (not shown) so that the speed of the rollers is determined by the speed of the wire being drawn. The frame is mounted on a carriage 4 supported by two vertical stanchions 15 and 16, each of which comprises a guide rail 17 and a rack 18. Mounted on the stanchion 15 is a fixed piston 19 co-operating with a double-acting hydraulic cylinder 20 attached to the frame. In this manner the position of the frame may be adjusted. Rollers 21 attached to the carriage co-operate with the rails 17 to guide the frame and a shaft 24 has fixed to it pinions 22 and 23 which engage the racks 18 and ensure that the carriage remains level. A guard 25 restrains the end of the wire as it leaves the swift. The separate sets of rollers 12 and 14 may be replaced by a single set of flanged rollers.
