682,008. Coating wires. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN. Dec. 28, 1949. [Dec. 31, 1948] No. 33104/49. Class 140. An apparatus for helically marking filamentary material such as insulated wire and rubber tubing, comprises an annular marking device formed with a slot on its inner surface, the slot being supplied with marking liquid, and means for causing the wire to move axially of the device and at the same time around the slot in order to apply a helical mark to the wire. In Fig. 1 the slot is formed between two collars 15 and 20 each having an internal conical aperture, the collar 15 being screwed into a side plate 9 and the collar 20 being adjustably mounted in a cylindrical extension 16 of another side plate 10 bounding an annular reservoir for the marking fluid. The reservoir is provided with a filling cap 13 and a nipple 14 through which compressed air is applied. Means are provided for causing the wire to move in the direction of the arrow through a centering device 21 and through an aperture 6 eccentrically placed in a pulley 3 which is rotated to cause the wire to move around the slot at the same time as it moves axially so obtaining a helical mark on its surface. The width of the mark may be varied by varying the distance between the collars 15 and 20. In a modification, Fig. 2, the marking device is placed horizontally and comprises four thin discs 23 gripped between the collars 15 and 20, each disc having an internal annular depression 24, Fig. 4a, and channels 25 for conveying marking fluid from the reservoir to the depression. In a further modification, the discs are of uniform thickness and are separated by thin flat washers. A broken line may be imparted by interrupting the slot at intervals. Several helical marks may be obtained by passing the wire successively through a number of the devices.
