900,419. Electric selective signalling systems. FAIRBANKS, MORSE & CO. Nov. 24, 1958 [Nov. 25, 1957], No. 37755/58. Class 40 (1). In a device for converting a first representation of multi-digit decimal number, in which each digit thereof is represented by a manually or automatically set group of contacts significant in combination to a second representation in which the decimal digits appear successively in time each represented by a marking on a selected one of ten leads, the individual digits of the first representation are examined in turn under the control of a stepping switch and re-coded by a conventional relay recoding tree. As described, a 3-decimal digit number is registered on contacts 62-72, in a 1, 2, 2, 4 code, the hundreds denomination as shown only having the three bits 1, 2 and 2. These three groups, starting with the hundreds denomination, are examined in turn, by a stepping switch 15 having banks of contacts 23, 24, and recoded by relays 87-90, to energize a single one of solenoids 0-9. The examination of each group takes 2 steps of the stepping switch, in the first of which relays 87- 90 are set to prepare a circuit path to one of solenoids 0-9, and in the second of which current is applied to a lead 145 to actually energize one of the solenoids. The solenoids may provide a printed or punched output and also enter the number into a computing machine.
