A marine propulsion installation in which an engine 6 drives a variable pitch propeller through a clutch 7 and shaft 4 and the pitch of the propeller is changed by a pull-push rod 3 actuated by a hydraulic motor 2 has an auxiliary high pressure ram 10 which is moved by oil or grease from the hand pump 11. The ram 10 is adapted to act on the piston of the motor 2 in the event of seizure.
