[Also in Groups XIV and XXV] A clothes drier, which can be converted for use as a space heater, comprises a supporting frame 10, made up of parts 31, 32 and having side members connected by horizontal rods 11, and a heating frame 16, the frames being pivotally interconnected for movement into two positions in each of which they are releasably locked together. In the airing position, shown in broken lines in Fig. 1, the frame 16 is horizontal and the parts 31, 32 extend co-linearly vertically relatively to the floor F, the rods 11 being used for the support of clothes to be dried, and in the space-heating position, shown in full lines in Fig. 1, the frame 16 is vertical and the parts 31, 32 are co-extensive with each other and with the frame 16. The frame 10 is of tubular, light metal, e.g. aluminium, the parts 31, 32 in both positions being interconnected by spigot-and-socket joints and releasably secured by pin-and-socket locking devices to the heating frame 16 which comprises an open mesh grid 28, end-plates 17, which may be apertured and are spaced by parallel rods 18, 19, 19a, 20, and intermediate plates 23, 24 through which pass heating elements 21, 22. The heating elements are connected in series or in parallel, a thermostat being included in the circuit, have waterproofing 29, and are surrounded by layers 55, 56 of expanded metal which convert radiant heat into convected heat. In a modification the heat is converted by radial fins of flattened, expanded or sheet metal surrounding each element without touching it. Specification 821,560 is referred to.
