Magnesium glucoheptonate (a mixture of two enantiomorpho) is prepared by treating d-glucose with sodium cyanide and calcium chloride in aqueous solution to form glucoheptonic nitriles which hydrolyse to calcium glucoheptonates. Upon the addition of magnesium hydroxide, magnesium glucoheptonate precipitates. It is a laxative and purgative (see Division A5).ALSO:A pharmaceutical composition for oral administration in unit dosage form comprising a non-toxic amount, not less than 4.0 g., of magnesium glucoheptonate (see Division C2) and a pharmaceutical or other edible carrier or diluent. Water is the preferred carrier but the magnesium glucoheptonate may be sprinkled on foods, mixed with sugar in sweets or put up in capsules. It has laxative and purgative activity.
