The invention comprises monoazo dyes of formula FORM:1005237/C4-C5/1 wherein R is the residue of a diazotizable amine, Ar is an aryl radical, M is an alkylene radical, N is 0 or 1, Y is an ortho- or paradihydroxyphenyl radical and Q is a -COOZ or -CON(R2)R3 radical wherein Z is an alkyl radical and each R2 and R3 is hydrogen or an aliphatic radical or R2 and R3 may be joined to form a divalent aliphatic radical. The dyes are used in photographic processes and compositions (see Division G2). The dyes are prepared by coupling a diazotized amine with a pyrazolone of formula FORM:1005237/C4-C5/2 wherein Y1 is an o- or p-diacyloxyphenyl radical and saponifying the dye obtained to convert the acyloxy groups to hydroxy groups. The dyes containing a carboxamido group in 3-position are prepared by reacting the dyes containing a 3-alkoxycarbonyl group with ammonia or amines such as mono- and dimethyl- or -ethyl-amines, piperidine, hydrazines, hydroxylamines and guanidines and if necessary, saponifying the acyloxy groups in Y1.
