Paper, e.g. for manifold record material, is coated with a dispersion of binding &c. materials in water into which has been mixed in dry, particulate form, an absorbent pigment, e.g. attapulgite, sodium alumino silicate zeolite, or zeolite wherein the sodium has been substituted by hydrogen, calcium, nickel, copper, iron, zinc, mercury, barium, lead, cadmium, or potassium; or clay, e.g. kaolin may be used. Sodium pyrophosphate may also be included. The dry pigment has microscopic clumps, enabling less water to be used in the dispersion, and resulting in a more adsorbent and absorbent coating, due to particles in the clumps being protected from contact with the binder.
