949,909. Unpacking. BAKER PERKINS HOLDINGS Ltd. July 31, 1962 [Feb. 23, 1962], No. 29448/62. Heading B8C. [Also in Division A4] Suction cups 63 are supported on a belt conveyer 55 and move at the same linear speed as loaves B in tins P on conveyer 29. On passing under suction box 54 the cups lock on to the tops of the loaves and, as the conveyers 55 and 29 diverge, the loaves are extracted from the tins. At the moment the vacuum in suction box 54 is applied to the cups a downward air blast is directed on to the ends of the loaf to loosen it. Fan 69 evacuates box 54 and supplies a further air blast at 77 which also serves to loosen the loaves in the tins. The suction box 54 rests within the conveyer 55 and is vertically adjustable with it through rotation of screw-threaded support-rod 42 by means of handle 53 and chain-andsprocket drives 51 and 45. As shown, batches of four loaves are presented to conveyer 55 in end-on position. In another form, the batches, which may be of four or five loaves, are presented in broadside-on position and each row of cups 63 has a control slide bar with holes arranged to prevent the application of suction to cups which do not engage a loaf. The position of each bar is automatically set by a movable guide whose inclination is varied in accordance with the number of loaves sensed by a feeler.
