PICT:0963709/C6-C7/1 PICT:0963709/C6-C7/2 In a method of continuous casting, which comprises conducting the melt through a degasification chamber shortly before entering the mould, the melt to be degassed is fed into the degasification chamber 3 from below and into a part of the chamber situated below the bath level 15. The melt from the intermediate container 2 is drawn into the degasification chamber by the high vacuum prevailing therein and is constrained to flow into the region of the bath level by a transverse barrier 18 in the chamber. The degassed metal flows into the mould 8 through a discharge pipe 20 which dips into the bath of molten metal in the mould, the melt between the pipe and the wall of the mould being heated inductively and circulated to prevent freezing. The degasification chamber may be preheated by an oil or gas burner 7 inserted through an opening 5. In a modification, Fig. 4, the melt enters the chamber 3 centrally of its bottom and is discharged as jets 24 to two or more symmetrically arranged moulds 8, the jets being shielded by combustible gas from burners 25. The feed rate of degassed metal to the mould is varied by varying the difference in height between the level in the intermediate container and the level within the mould when a discharge pipe 20 is used, or of the pouring nozzle 27a, Fig. 4.
