An apparatus for teaching arithmetic comprises a set of elements including a basic element 1L, which is a cube having an edge of a length L and a number of further elements, whose length increases in a simple arithmetical progression viz. 2L, 3L up to 10L. The elements of lengths 2L, 3L and 5L are of different primary colours and elements 4L, 8L and 9L corresponding to the powers of 2L and 3L, respectively, are of the colour of the respective base element 2L or 3L, but of progressively greater intensity. The elements 6L and 10L are of the composite colours of 2L, 3L and 2L, 5L respectively. The apparatus may also comprise a set of 12 elements the colour of element 12 being a composite colour derived from the elements 3L and 4L. The set may include a variable number of such elements, the number of elements in the set decreasing with the increasing numerical value of the elements.
