1,002,568. Sawing. W. WITSCHNIG. June 12, 1962 [June 13, 1961], No. 22482/62. Heading B5L. A machine for cutting up semi-cylindrical bodies into individual semi-tubular elements comprises cylindrical saw blades of stepped diameters which act one after the other and are arranged on a common guide member carrier. The cylindrical saw blades 1, Fig. 1, of stepped diameters are mounted on a common carrier 3 and the semi-cylindrical bodies, such as logs, are fed past the blades by a chain 17 having dogs 19, 20 and running in a groove in the guide member 3. Each blade 1 is guided by inner and outer rollers 2, 8, Fig. 2, the inner rollers being supported by the guide member 3. The central outer roller 8 is carried by slide 10 vertically adjustable by horizontal movement of a wedge connected to a threaded spindle 11, and the other outer rollers 8 are carried by pivoted arms 64. Each blade is rotated by a belt 16 which passes between the rollers 8 and the blade and is driven by a pulley 15 and motor 14, a spring-pressed roller 13 tensioning the belt. The inner rollers 2 are mounted on pins 65, Fig. 3, movable in radial slots 24 by rotation of a cam 25 by a rack-and-pinion mechanism 26, 27 or piston-and-cylinder device 29 to enable the rollers to be radially adjustable. Axial movement of the blades relative to the rollers is prevented by collars on the rollers engaging grooves in the saw blades or by rollers engaging the back edges of the blades. The rollers may be replaced in other embodiments by blocks which are urged: into engagement with the blades by pairs of hydraulic piston-and-cylinder devices or a single semicylindrical block may engage each blade, one end of the block having a shoulder engaged by the back edge of the blade to prevent axial movement thereof. Passages are provided in the guide member 3 and the blocks to permit lubricant to be supplied to the rubbing surfaces of the blades and blocks. The guide member 3 is at one end mounted on a pivot 21 and at the other end is vertically movable in guides 6 by rotation of spindles 7, the lifting of the member permitting the blades to be removed or replaced. A. roller 22 is provided at the feed end of the machine to maintain the workpiece in engagement with the member 3. In another embodiment, the outer rollers 118, Fig. 11, are adjustable by threaded spindles 116 having handles 117, guards for the belts 125 being movable at the same time, and the work is carried to and from the saw blades by trucks movable along a guide track by an endless chain. The saw blades may be cleaned on their inner and outer surfaces by elements 136, Fig. 19, which are pivotally mounted on channels 138 and urged into engagement with the surfaces of the blades by adjustable springs 135, suction being applied to the channels to withdraw dust and chippings.
