In a fast nuclear reactor, rapid or pulsed changes in the reactivity are effected by movable members adjacent to the core. The core reflector is provided with an aperture which may be covered by the members or screens. Each screen causes a characteristic increase in reactivity when positioned over the aperture and the maximum increase, or pulse, of reactivity occurs when both screens cover the aperture simultaneously. The inner screen is formed with slots or gaps and the outer screen with zones of reactivity increasing material which, when in register with the slots of the inner screen, during total overlap of the aperture, produce the reactivity pulse.
