1,087,135. Snap-action switches. PLESSEYU.K. Ltd. July 3, 1964 [July 24, 1963], No. 29345/63. Heading H2B. An on-off switch is actuated by an annular knob H, such as the knob of a potentiometer, and comprises an insulating base plate G carrying two contact pins A, B and a central boss C. A spring D is looped around pin B and is flexed by boss C so as to be urged into contact with pin A. The knob H carries an internal cam E which presents, to the end I of the spring, a slow rise up to an apex E 1 followed by a sharp drop Eg and, in the " off " position, when this cam is fully turned in the direction of the arrow X against a fixed stop F, see Fig. 3 (not shown), the resilience of the spring D causes its end I to move outwards along the surface E 2 so that the spring is itself lifted clear of the contact A. When the knob is there after turned clockwise, the cam carries the end of the spring around with it until it disengages itself and snaps back against the contact A. Returning the knob towards the "off" position causes the cam, towards the end of its travel, to engage the end I of the spring again and cause this to ride inwards up the slow rise of the cam until it reaches and passes the apex and again snaps to the open position.
