A water-hammer preventer comprises an air or gas chamber 22 separated from the water by a rubber &c. diaphragm 21 which may be preformed to the convex shape shown. A rubber washer 32 held at its centre by a headed bush 33 which is force-fitted into a central hole in the housing part 11 controls apertures 18 so that water can flow freely into the space 23 but can escape only through a passage 36 in the bush. A metal disc bonded to the centre of the diaphragm protects the latter when it is pressed against bush 33 by pressure in the chamber 22 which may be introduced through valve means (not shown) or by the provision during assembly of a piece of solid carbon dioxide. According to the Provisional Specification a rubber sac or a piston in a cylinder may replace the diaphragm, and the piston may be spring-loaded.
