Adjustable stops for registering sheets of material in machines for intermittently transferring the sheets into and out of work stations

A machine wherein sheets are separated one at a time from the bottom of a stack and subsequently fed intermittently from one work station to another by barbed grippers 50, as described in Specifications 987,232 and 987,233, is provided with adjustable front stops 54 to register a sheet prior to engagement by the grippers. The front stops are individually or simultaneously adjustable. In the former arrangement, a rotatable shaft 52 carries a plurality of spaced plates 56. A stud 68 projects from each plate and has a bracket 57 slidably mounted thereon. The latter supports a front stop 54. An arresting pin 78 projecting from the bracket 57, is maintained against a knob 76 at the free end of the stud, by a compression spring 74, said pin seating in one of a plurality of steps 80 formed on the face of the knob 76. The depth of the steps varies progressively, whereby each bracket and its associated stop 54 may be moved towards, or away from, the stack of sheets 20 by rotating said knob 76. Alternatively, the stops 118 (Fig. 7) are secured to a sleeve 100 rotatably mounted on a shaft 98. The sleeve is positioned on the shaft by collars 102, 108, the latter having a projection 112 engaging a cutout 106 in the sleeve, to limit rotational movement of the sleeve about the shaft. The shaft 98 is provided with flats 130 at each end on its upper and lower sides, which engage in a sliding fit, apertures 128 in the sides 122 of the machine frame. Eccentrics 134 extend through elongated slots 132 in each end of the shaft and are individually rotatable by knobs 156. Hence the. stops 118 carried on the shaft may be moved simultaneously either forward, or backward, or the shaft 98 moved to lie at an angle to the sides 122. In operation, the bottom sheet is fed forwardly below the barred grippers 50, being deflected downwards by a plate 58. After registration of the sheet against the front stops 54, a vertically reciprocating presser foot 92 rises to lift the front stops and impale the sheet on the barbs 50.
