The method involves arranging a set of stops at distance with respect to each other, where the stops are served for adjustment of a paper sheet (7). A directional beam that is aligned transverse to the paper sheet is produced. The stops (26) are viewed in paper sheet transportation direction, and are moved behind a line formed by the directional beam. The stops are moved in paper sheet transportation direction until the directional beam is interrupted. The stops are made inoperative, and are moved backward in paper sheet transportation direction. An independent claim is also included for a sheet-fed rotary printing press with a device for adjusting stops in a paper sheet processing machine.
