1,037,101. Suspended furnace roofs. MAERZ OFENBAU A.G. Feb. 15, 1963 [Feb. 15, 1962], No. 6336/63. Heading F4B. An open hearth furnace roof is made up of a number of freely suspended sections each comprising a frame 3 pivotally suspended by rods 2 from furnace framework 1, and bricks 7 suspended by hangers 6 in pairs from supporting bars on the frames, said hangers being greater in length than the bricks are in height. Each frame 3 has lateral bars 4 engaging the rods 2 near each end, the bars 5 being partly rigidly connected to the bars 4 and partly laid thereon. The upper ends of the rods 2 are screwed at 16, and are supported by ball-andsocket joints comprising bushes 14 held by nuts 15 against spherical surfaces 13 in holes 12 formed in plates 1b fixed to the framework girders 1, Fig. 3 (not shown). Instead of the suspension shown, adjoining corners of two or four of the frames 3 may be connected to a ring at the bottom of a common suspension rod 2, Fig. 6 (not shown). The bars 5 may also be replaced by tubes, Fig. 5 (not shown). Inserts 11, which may be of asbestos where chromemagnesite bricks are used, are disposed between the border bricks of adjacent frames to facilitate relative movement therebetween.
