870,223. Furnace roofs. OSTERREICHISCH-AMERIKANISCHE MAGNESIT A.G. March 23, 1960 [April 16, 1959], No. 10336/60. Class 51 (2). A polygonal roof for melting furnaces, particularly for tiltable, open-hearth furnaces, comprises flat roof sections A ... D, Fig. 1, formed of bricks 1, suspended from flat iron bars 4 by wire hooks 3, which bars have at their ends slot-shaped recesses which receive the lower flanges of supporting I-section beams 6, which beams are connected by adjustable fixing means to transverse girders 13 of the furnace framework so that the girders together with the fixing ineans form a triangular bracing. The fixing means comprise bolts 7, 8 pivoted to tabs 9, 10 to angle-brackets 11, 11SP1/SP and 12, 12SP1/SP secured to the girders by nuts 14, 14a, 15.. 15a which screw on the bolts. The bars 4 rest on the front and back walls of the furnace on angle beams 5 which are secured in the longitudinal direction of the furnace to the furnace framework. Another I-section beam 6SP1/SP is suspended above the apex of the roof from the girder by a bolt 16 and nut 17 and is supported against rising by supportplates 18 having fixing angles 19. To prevent buckling of the roof above the back wall during tilting of the furnace the bricks at that region are prevented from rising by flanges 20a, 20b, Fig. 2, of I-section beams 20 which conform to the profile of the roof. The web of each I-section beam 20 has a support-plate 21 having a slot-shaped aperture 21 to receive a flange of the associated beam 6. The roof is supported in the transverse direction of the furnace by a fixed abutment 24 suspended by hangers 22, 23 from the girder 13, or by a spring-cushioned abutment 25 provided with a buffer 26.
