Symbols 10 are secured to the backing-plate 13 of a vehicle number plate by subjecting each symbol to impact to cause tubular metal studs 11 thereon to penetrate through the backing plate, the outer edges of the studs being deflected by a supporting base 15 to form shoulders overlying the back surface of the plate 13 (see Fig. 4, not shown). The studs may be of a mild or medium carbon steel, the backing plate of aluminium or soft aluminium alloy and the symbols of lightreflecting plastics or metal.
