Class 73 [Also in Group VIII] Relates to heat sealable tabs or labels for removable attachment to textile articles under heat and pressure and in particular to labels comprising a fabric or paper-like material coated with a layer of thermoplastic material on one face or alternatively a woven or other fabric consisting partly of thermoplastic yarns and partly of non-thermoplastic yarns and with the thermoplastic yarns exposed mainly or exclusively on that face of the fabric which is to be adhered to an article. According to the invention a strip S, Fig. 2, of tab material having a width corresponding to the length of the finished tab is partially severed at one side edge, the severed portion t is folded under on itself with the thermoplastic bearing faces in facial contact and thereafter the severance is completed to provide a tab having a non-adherent finger grip which facilitates subsequent removal of the tab from the article. Apparatus for producing such tabs may be embodied in the machine for applying tabs to textile articles described in Specification 836,417 and may comprise feed rollers (not shown) adapted to supply the strip S to a point between upper and lower shear cutter blades 19, 20, Fig. 7, and on to a table 9 standing forwardly from the lower blade 20. The blade 19 is fixed to a rod 21 vertically slidable in guides 23, 35 and actuated by linkage 25 and a cam associated with the main shaft of the machine. The holder 22 which secures the blade 19 to the rod 21 also acts a slide mounting for a member 27 carrying the angled folder member 8, Figs. 5, 7, which can also reciprocate horizontally on actuation of lever mechanism 31, 32 by a cam (not shown) associated with the machine. The cutter blade 19 is caused to execute the first part of its movement to sever the tongue portion t from the supply strip S and at the same time the angled folding member 8 moves the portion t downwardly. Thereafter the folding member 8 moves forwardly to press the portion t against the under face of the leading edge of the table 9. Before the slide rod 21 continues its downward movement the transfer grippers 501, 502, Fig. 5, engage the folded under part of the tab T so that the folded under edge is retained in position and then as the slide rod 21 continues its downward movement the tab T is completely severed and the grippers 501, 502 carries the tab from the table 9 to the successive working stations.
