Acetylenic hydrocarbons in admixture with conjugated diolefines, particularly C4 acetylenes in admixture to the extent of up to 2000 p.p.m. with 1,3-butadiene, are selectively hydrogenated by passage over a copper-oxide-chromium oxide catalyst containing 20-70% copper oxide and 80-30% chromium oxide, the amount of hydrogen being at least equivalent to the acetylenic hydrocarbons, and preferably being 2-10 moles, and the pressure and temperature being 15-50 p.s.i.g. and 100-250 DEG F., respectively. A suitable catalyst is that containing 50-55% copper oxide and 40-45% chromium oxide, prepared according to the disclosure of U.S.A. Specification 2,088,425. Other catalysts are produced by precipitation with ammonia or other water-soluble base from an aqueous copper and chromium-containing solution and calcination of the precipitate at 600-800 DEG F.
