A copy-milling machine comprises a worktable 38 longitudinally slidable on a support 20 adjustable vertically on a main pedestal 12, a cross-head 16 supported at its ends on the main pedestal and an auxiliary pedestal 14, and a spindle-head 30 slidable across the head and carrying a vertical milling-spindle 54, there being a pattern-carrying table 46 located outside the auxiliary pedestal and alongside the work-table, the tables being movable together longitudinally and vertically. A hand lever 26 operates clamps to secure the support 20 to the pedestal 12 and to the pedestal 14 by way of the T-slot 24 therein. The head 16 has ways 28 to support the gear-box 30 and ways 32 to support a slide 34. The ways 28 are separated by a recess to accommodate an hydraulic cylinder to move the gear-box 30. The support 20 is adjusted by a screw or an hydraulic cylinder 36. The table 38 moves on inclined guides 40 and carries a support 42 carrying a slide 44 surmounted by a compound table 48, 50 and the pattern table 46. A control panel 51 is mounted on the support 42. A spindle 70, for a milling-cutter for finishing, is rotated by cased belt gearing 72 and is mounted in a casing 68 bolted to the spindle head 52 adjustable vertically on the box 30 by an hydraulic device 62. The spindle head contains the rough-cutting spindle 54 rotated by a motor 56 at a speed adjusted by controls 58, 60. An hydraulic control device 76 can be mounted on the casing 68 or on a storage bracket 64 on the box 30 when the finishing is to be under manual control. The device 76 includes a tracer 116, Fig. 7, engaged in a conically-recessed stub 112 on a slide 86. A tracer head 90 is mounted on a slide 88 which can be clamped by a screw 92 to the slide 86 movable on a beam 82 which is adjustable vertically on the slide 34 and is balanced by a spring 106. A pantograph 98 is tiltable about a pivot 104 and is connected to the beam 82 by a bracket 96. The slide 86 can thus be moved by the pantograph in three co-ordinate directions. In operation, with the casing 68 locked to the head 52, the tracer 90 can be guided over the pattern by the handle 100 on the pantograph so that the feeler 116 is caused to control vertical movement of the spindle head, horizontal movement of the box 30 and horizontal movement of the table 38. The combined movements of work and tool thus cause the pattern to be reproduced. It it is desired to cut in consecutive strokes, the slide 34 is looked by a lever 108, the table 38 then being fed incrementally. For finishing, the control element 76 is placed in the bracket 64, the slide 86 is locked to the casing 68 and the casing is detached from the box 30 which is moved out-ofthe-way to the left.
