The invention comprises (A) salts of 4a,11a-diazoniapentacene - 6,13 - dione or 4a,7a-diazoniapentacene-6,13-dione of the formula FORM:1111313/C2/1 wherein X(-) is an anion and the biradical A has the formula FORM:1111313/C2/2 (B) salts of 4a-azoniaanthracene-5,8- or -5,6-diones of the formulae FORM:1111313/C2/3 FORM:1111313/C2/4 wherein X(-) is an anion and each R4 is H, alkyl or aryl with the limitation in Formula II that if one R4 is t-butyl or isopropyl the other is H; and (C) salts of 4a,8a-diazoniapentaphene-6,7-dione of the formula FORM:1111313/C2/5 wherein X(-) is an anion. The salts of Formula I may be obtained by cyclising, in the presence of a cyclodehydrating agent, a diester formed from a C1-4 aliphatic carboxylic acid and a 2,5-or 2,6-bis [11-azonia-21-(111, 311-dioxolan-211-yl) benzyl] hydroquinone salt. The cyclodehydration reaction may be effected at a temperature of 15 DEG C. up to the thermal decomposition temperature of the desired product, optionally with the cyclodehydrating agent in solution in water or a C1- 4 alkanoic acid. The compounds of Formulae II, III and IV may be obtained by oxidizing the corresponding diol (which itself may be obtained by the process described in Specification 1,111,311). The oxidation reaction may be effected in an inert solvent, suitable oxidizing agents being ferric chloride, cupric chloride, nitric acid and benzoquinone. The anionic component of the above salts may be exchanged, e.g. by treating the salt with an acid or salt yielding the desired anion.
