Chlorobromomethanes are prepared by subjecting a chloromethane to the action of hydrogen bromide in the presence of chlorine, the molar ratio of chlorine to hydrogen bromide being equal to or lower than unity. Undesired chlorobrominated compounds may be recycled to the reaction medium after removal of the desired chlorobromomethane from the raw product. Chloro- and bromo-methanes are obtained as by-products. Examples are given. Specification 874,062 is referred to.
