摘要
Particles of a mineral suitable as a filler for organic material and having a solubility less than 10-3 molar have an inner coating of a polyamine and an outer coating of an organic substance compatible with the organic composition to which the mineral is to be added as a filler, the organic substance, which is preferably the same as that to which the mineral is to be added as a filler, containing an acid hydroxyl group (e.g. a phenolic resin), a carboxyl group (e.g. acrylic acid), a carbonyl group (e.g. acetone or benzaldehyde), an epoxy group (e.g. an epoxy resin), a nitro group (e.g. nirtocellulose), or a group which is a sulphur analogue of one of the first three group (e.g. nitrocellulose), or a group which Minerals specified are clay, barytes, sphalerite (ZnS), rutile, kaolinite, mullite, and graphite. The polyamine may be ethylene diamine, hexamethylene diamine, tetraethylene diamine, diethylene triamine, tetraethylene pentamine, or guanidine. In Example 1, secondary Georgia kaolin is mixed with water to give a solid: water ratio of 1:4 and is stirred to assure dispersion, 0.4% of ethylene diamine is added as a 75% solution and mechanically mixed, and 0.4% of the polyester resin known under the Registered Trade Mark "Selectron 5003L" is added as a 2% emulsion formed by gradually adding dilute ammonium hydroxide to the agitated resin-water mixture to maintain the pH at 8 until all the resin has been dispersed. The clay is flocculated by the addition of a sulphuric acid-alum solution, filtered, dried at 125 DEG C., and pulverized. The treated clay is added to a polyester resin. The amounts of ethylene diamine and of emulsified resin may be varied, and viscosity data are given in Example 2. The resin may also be a phenolic resin, or a short-oil alkyd resin.
