A vessel 14 for carrying general and bulk cargo has a main deck, a self-supporting 'tween deck 20 and a series of transverse bulkheads 44 defining cargo holds longitudinally of the vessel, each of the cargo holds extending the full width of the vessel, upper side ballast tanks 15 under the main. deck, the lowermost portion of each of which is approximately eight feet six inches above the 'tween deck, a centrally located hatch opening 22 in the main deck and 'tween deck of each hold of the vessel, a series of cargo feeder openings 43, 45 in the 'tween deck 20 located around the hatch opening and hinged covers 23, 24, 48 for the 'tween deck hatch opening and cargo feeder openings respectively. The hatch openings 22 have a width equal to approximately 50 per cent of the breadth of the vessel and the hinged covers 23, 24, 48 are positioned: flush with the top surface of the 'tween deck. As shown in Fig. 8, the hinged hatch covers 23, 24 of the 'tween deck hatch opening may act as bulk cargo diverters to some of the cargo feeder openings.
